McKinley peak photos
From the 2014 hike, ah, to be young again
The path to the top
Only 20 miles round trip. but lots of steep grades
Early morning, test of my new built E-Bike
The path ahead scars the mountain
Dave, with water & hiking clothes in backpack
MOVIE: a flat spot 1/2 way up
The grade starts out bad….
…but it gets worse, much worse
At least it is a clear bright day
Nobody lives out there
Very little water out here, only a spring or two
We met some friendly bikepackers
They had spent 2 nights on the mountain
They carried a lot of stuff on the bikes
.. a lot of heavy stuff
No electric motors for these two….
This is called “Hells 1/2 acre"
Not my favorite part, but one of many
An intersection of several trails
McKinley Springs
Springs are precious here, and far apart
There are tables and there is always water here
Water is worth more than gold in the Las Padres Forest
Made it to the top of the road
Above 5,000 you really start to feel the altitude
Over that ridge is McKinley Pines camp site
We go 1/2 mile up this away, that is not the top, but when you get there...
you can see the top a way over yonder
Dave took some pictures of me on the way up
Its a short hike, but a tough one
To get around this brush, you have to climb along the cliff face, and climb some rocks to the very top
Along the edge
MOVIE: The path is over these rocks
Finely, the top
4 feet from the top
Angle over my shoulder; or maybe a butterfly
This tired old man was just glad to get here
Panaroma from the top
The Santa Ynez Valley
Close up of Lake Cachuma reservoir
MOVIE: Santa Ynez Valley
MOVIE: Lake Cachuma
MOVIE: Down the cliff and around
Headed back down
2 hours later, and 1 mile from the end, I dumped the bike
No obviouse reason to crash, but I did
At least I fell towards the mountain and not over the edge
The second crash I could see the cause, and again better, I fell toward the mountain
Back at the car enjoying a BEER
